<hi style=afpcap>Curtiss produced their model R-6 racer which took first and second places in the 1922 Pulitzer Prize race. The success lead the company to develop a single seat fighter as a private venture. The Army showed interest even before the prototype was completed, issuing a order for three aircraft designated PW-8. Various modifications were applied, before an order for 25 production versions was placed in 1924. </hi>
